The best way to animate a bike race is to put a little money on the line.

"Primes" are announced on selected laps in a criterium to get the riders to sprint during the race, and not just sit on each other's wheels and wait for the final kick at the finish.

At the annual Davis, CA 4th of July women's crit, there was a wad of cash waiting for the winner of the crowd prime. Didja ever wonder how they gather up the money for the big-bucks prize? Well, wonder no more. Check out the creative ways the hat was passed in Davis, in the following CycleTo video.

American Mara Abbott proved that she's the best climber...and descender...in the bunch, with a decisive win today in Stage 8 of the women's Giro d'Italia.

Abbott left everyone else in the dust, beating runner-up Emma Pooley of the Cervelo Test Team by a full 1:27 at the finish in Livigno. The US team had two in the top ten, with Amber Neben in 10th place.

Abbott's attack puts her into the overall lead of the race, a slim 19 seconds ahead of Judith Arndt of HTC-Columbia. Neben is 7th overall, with Evelyn Stevens...Thursday's stage winner...in 10th place.

Tomorrow, the queen stage of the Giro Donne, with the mountain-top finish atop the 9,000 foot Passo dello Stelvio.

This should settle the old "which is better...the road rider or the mountain biker?" argument.

Levi Leipheimer, in his first competitive off-road race and only two weeks after finishing the Tour de France, blew away the field in the annual Leadville 100 on Saturday, beating runner-up Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski by nine full minutes.

Todd Wells finished third with six-time winner Dave Wiens in fourth in the grueling Colorado mountain race.

How good was Levi today? His time of 6:16:37 is more than 12 minutes better than the course record set by Lance Armstrong...another road rider...last year. Lance pulled out of this year's Leadville 100 earlier in the week, citing a lingering hip injury he suffered at the Tour.

But this was no walk in the park for Levi. As he said via Twitter today, "That was so damn hard! One of the harder days I've ever had on a bike."

If there were any lingering doubts about the future of cycling phenom Taylor Phinney, those doubts may have been erased last night.

Phinney beat a field of some of the best pros in America, winning the opening 2.8 mile prologue time trial in the Tour of Utah.

20-year-old Phinney blistered the Salt Lake City course in 6:02:59, just a shade under three seconds better than runner-up...and Trek-Livestrong teammate...Alex Dowsett, the current European U23 TT champion. BMC's Brett Bookwalter, last year's Utah prologue winner, was third, more than 11 second behind Phinney.

BMC teammates Jeff Louder and George Hincapie were 7th and 8th, with Levi Leipheimer in 10th, just days after winning the grueling Leadville 100 mountain bike race.

The Tour of Utah continues today, with an 85 mile road stage, beginning in Ogden and ending in Salt Lake City. We'll have great photos from Utah on CycleTo all week, courtesy of Brian Hodes of VeloImages.
