Most 22 year old students get a summer job. A lucky few might travel to some foreign land.
And then there’s Larkspur, California’s Dewey Helvestine.
On a $450 bicycle loaded with 25 pounds of spare clothes and camping gear, he set off from Norfolk, Virginia. 34 days and 3,763 miles later he rolled into Stinson Beach, California, stiff and sore in places he never imagined, but filled with memories of summertime cross country bike trip that most could only dream of, and few could ever finish.
Why ride across America, and why do it in just 34 days?

We're doing something we've never done before on CycleTo...we're giving you a chance to win something every day, for two full weeks!
VeloShine bike wipes are a new product that you use to clean all the parts of your bike...the chain, chain rings, cassette, tires, wheels and frame. I can personally attest to the fact that this stuff really works...and it works really well. The VeloShine wipes won't tear apart when you're cleaing the gunk off your chain, when they're completely biodegradable. So when you're done cleaning your bike, just toss 'em in your recycle bin. Too easy!
Thanks to the folks at VeloShine, we'll be giving away an 18-pack of VeloShine wipes each day for two weeks, beginning Monday, September 6 and ending Sunday, September 19. For all the details, and to register for these daily CycleTo freebies, go here. |

The race ended last Sunday in Rome, but we're still winding down from our month in Italy. Covering the Giro d'Italia can be an overwhelming experience. The scenery, the racing, the crowds, the food...at times it feels like you're trying to take a drink of water from a fire hose. But there are certain little things that make the job of the media much easier at the Giro. Here's an inside look at one of the best perks of the job...a full-on police escort down the hill, right behind the Giro peloton. It's pretty cool to break this many laws, and get away with it. Check it out, in the following CycleTo video. |

Sometimes, what happens in Vegas isn't always supposed to stay in Vegas. Now that all the post-Interbike hangovers have worn off, and everyone has gone back to their "normal" lives, we can look back at some of the best new toys and tech from the annual autumn bike fest. Andrew Christensen, owner of BiciSport in Petuluma, CA, was CycleTo's correspondent at Interbike. He gives us his take on the best not-to-be-missed goodies from the show. |

Our daily "Tour Socks" contest has ended, and we have a winner. All during the Tour de France, we asked you to send us your picks for the daily stage winners, and we awarded CycleTo socks to the people who correctly predicted the winners. We kept track of all the daily winners, tallied all the results, and we'll award the white CycleTo jersey to the person who picked the most daily winners during the Tour. The competition was tight, but there is a clear champion of the Tour Socks contest. The CycleTo jersey goes to... |
