Quick Step cyclist Tom Boonen will not race the Tour of France next month. Today, the ASO...the organizing body of the Tour...said they will not allow Boonen to ride in their race, following his recent failed drug test.

Responding to allegations in the Belgian press that he has tested positive for cocaine, Boonen was both contrite and cautious today as he faced the assembled media.

Reading from a prepared statement, Boonen said, " I have ashamed the confidence of my family, my friends, my team and my fans."

Quick Step boss Patrick Lefevere says Boonen will step away from competition, including the upcoming Tour of Switzerland. Quick Step will be allowed to race in July's Tour de France, but withbout Boonen.

The last big event on the pro race calendar rolls in Italy this weekend.

The Giro di Lombardia, the annual "race of the falling leaves" through the region of Lombardia, begins in Varese and finishes in Como.

The route varies from year to year, but always includes the climb up to the Madonna del Ghisallo.

The iconic church at the top is one of those places that every cyclist should see at least once in his or her life.

...and kissing the statue of Fausto Coppi isn't mandatory, but it is a sign of true devotionn.

If you can't get there yourself, ride along as CycleTo rolls from Bellagio up the Ghisallo.

Germany Says "Auf Wiedersehen" To Pro Cycling
Thursday, 16 October 2008

Three things happened today that signal bad news ahead for professional bike racing:

1. German TV networks ZDF and ARD say they will not broadcast the 2009 Tour de France.

2. The 2009 Tour of Germany has been canceled.

3. The 2009 Tour of Stuttgart has been canceled.

Add this to Gerolsteiner's earlier decision to drop their sponsorship.

It's all a part of the fallout from the on-going drug scandals in the sport, scandals that caught fire with T-Mobile's Jan Ullrich and Patrick Sinketitz in 2007, and continued with Gerolsteiner's Stefan Schumacher and Bernhard Kohl this week.

This does not bode well for the future of the sport. Be afraid...be very afraid.

Another day, another doper...we're all getting pretty sick of this.

Today's edition of L'Equipe, the French sporting daily, says that Austrian cyclist Bernhard Kohl, the third-place finisher in this year's Tour de France, and the winner of the polka dot King of the Mountains jersey, used the blood-boosting drug CERA during this year's Tour.

How's your French? Read the full story in today's L'Equipe, here.

When will it stop? Not soon enough.

UPDATE:

We just received the following note from Silence-Lotto, the team that had signed Kohl for the 2009 season:
