Click images to zoom... We all figured that a Columbia-High Road rider would be on the podium at Gent-Wevelgem...but few picked Edvald Boasson Hagen as the man to beat in the Belgian rain.Pre-race fave Mark Cavendish popped a flat in the early going, missed the slection, and couldn't work his way back to the front. As the spitting rain turned to a full-on downpour, High Road's George Hincapie and Marcus Burhardt...both pervious winners of this race...worked to position Boassan Hagen in the front. The Norwegian came through at the finish, out-kicking Alexandr Kuschynski of Liquigas for the win. Poor Edvald...big wins like this are new to him, so he's a little unsure of the whole podium presentation protocol. He ended up wearing more champagne that he sprayed into the crowd. CycleTo caught up with High Road boss Bob Stapleton in the wet Wevelgem rain, and watched him congratulate Burghardt on his work for the team. While Gent-Wevelgem may not have the prestige of the Tour of Flanders or Paris-Roubaix, this High Road team still came here looking for victory. |
